How to calculate the number of days left
Subtract today’s date from the target date. The target day itself is not counted: on 24 December there is 1 day to go until Christmas. The “Exactly” line refines the result to the second: it measures the time until midnight at the start of the chosen day, using your device’s clock.
The calculator also shows how many working days and weekends are left until then, which helps when planning projects, trips or deadlines.
How the dates of holidays are set
Some dates are fixed, such as Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve or Bonfire Night. Others change every year:
- Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring, calculated by church rules from 21 March. It falls between 22 March and 25 April.
- Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) is 47 days before Easter Sunday, Mothering Sunday 21 days before, Good Friday 2 days before and Easter Monday the day after.
- The early May bank holiday is the first Monday in May, the spring bank holiday the last Monday in May and the summer bank holiday the last Monday in August.
- Father’s Day is the third Sunday in June and Remembrance Sunday the second Sunday in November.
- The clocks go forward on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October.
- Black Friday is the day after the American Thanksgiving, which falls on the fourth Thursday in November.
